Kravat-regiment guard change - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The Kravat Regiment is a Croatian light cavalry regiment from the XVII century. Except for the extraordinary heroism of its soldiers, the cavalry was recognisable for the picturesque scarves worn around the neck by its soldiers as part of their uniform, after which the tie is named. The scarf, worn in a knot, quickly became a fashion accessory and was known by the ethnic name of the Croats; as Krobatten in Germany and as Cravate in France. Through the establishment in 1664 of the Croatian regiment, the Royal Cravattes, in the French Royal Army, the cravat officially received a certificate of originality. Tourists can learn more about this and other stories if twenty minutes to noon, they head toward the Upper Town. Each guard change begins with a parade and review of the guard’s arms. The ceremony involves an entire formation of 12 soldiers and horsemen, after which they separate and head for St. Mark’s Square (side entrance to St. Mark’s Church), the Ban Josip Jelačić square and the Statue of Virgin Mary on Kaptol. They are accompanied by armourers, trumpeters, drummers, standard bearers and the commander. The whole event gives tourists an insight into the lost traditions of soldiers from the glorious past.

As soon as the April sun finds its way through the remnants of the winter clouds, the streets of Zagreb become the venue for a whole array of happenings which last until the autumn chills start, and which take us back through the history of the city. Walking through the streets of the Upper Town, the old part of Zagreb, you are certain to come across characters that made Zagreb famous – singers of old parlour ballads, bohemians or peasant women from the village of Šestine. Meanwhile, from the pavilion in the Zrinjevac park in the centre of town, the enchanting sounds of the waltz and tango will be heard again, just as depicted in old films and sentimental photographs.

The Klovićevi Dvori Gallery is hosting the exhibition The Master Pieces From the Picasso Museum in Paris opening on 23 March 2013 and bringing 56 paintings and sculptures created by the most famous master of the 20th century, the founder of cubism, painter, sculptor and graphic artist. The exhibition will present more than one hundred works of art and various documents depicting the exciting journey of the creator of modernism. Put in a chronological order, starting from Picasso’s early works and ending in the last years of his life, works from the blue and pink period, proto-cubism and explorations of Africa, the emblematic works of the analitical and synthetical cubism, classical period, surrealism and late paintings will all be exhibited in Zagreb until 7 July 2013. Picasso was an artist who shifted the artistic boundaries and deconstructed the traditional painting genres. Picasso dominated his times unrivaled. Behind a man who became a myth and the market value of his signature there is a very complex oeuvre created by an artist and, above all, a creator.

National Park - Krka - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The largest part of this amazing river’s course is the national park, which in addition to its natural phenomena abounds with cultural and historical monuments. The most outstanding of these is the Franciscan monastery on the tiny island of Visovac, set in the middle of the lake widening in the river like a precious stone.
Within the monastery there is a picture gallery and a church, origins of which are traced back to the 14th century. In the middle of the canyon, upstream of the river, is an interesting Krka Orthodox monastery; while on the high ground above the river several old ruins sit. The old mills, which have been transformed into small ethnographic museums where one can see how wheat was ground in the olden days, are a popular attraction for visitors.
Heritage interpreters are dressed in traditional folk costumes, which is particularly interesting and entertaining for children, who are frequent visitors of the park. However, the main attraction of Krka National Park lies in its seven waterfalls. The widest of these is Roški slap, although Skradinski buk is the biggest and most well known.

National Park - Mljet - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

Situated on the island of the same name, Mljet National Park is the most important protected area of the Dalmatian south. The park covers the western part of the island, which many regard as the most alluring in the Adriatic, full of lush and varied Mediterranean vegetation.
The park includes two deep bays which, due to their extremely narrow links with the sea, are regarded as and indeed named lakes: the Great Lake and the Small Lake. Mljet is also very rich in cultural heritage, the most prominent example being the complex of the 12th century Benedictine monastery.
The monastery is located on a small island in the middle of the Great Lake and is set in a lush park. Over the course of centuries, numerous chronicles, dissertations and other literary works have been written here. Located within the monastery is the church of St Mary.

National Park - Kornati - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The Kornati archipelago consists of 140 uninhabited islands, islets and reefs comprising an area of only 70 km2. They are famous for the peculiar shapes of reefs and crags but particularly for their high cliffs.
There are those who claim that the number of the smaller islands is even greater, since an old saying says: “As is the number of days in a year, so is the number of the Kornati islands”.
The main island Kornat is accounted for the largest part of the park and the whole island group is named after it. Due to the dangers involved in sailing through this maze of stone and sea, there are many old lighthouses on Kornati islands, such as Blitvenica and Sestrice, which today are destinations for Robinson-Crusoes-want-to-be.
The biggest admirers of Kornati are yachtsmen, who find in this area, that which they seek most: a sun soaked warren of sea and islands set in unspoilt nature.

National Park - Paklenica - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The greatest natural jewel of the Zadar area is Paklenica National Park, which covers the most attractive parts of the southern Velebit, concentrated in a mere 96 km2. Its most striking features are two forbidding gorges – Velika and Mala Paklenica. The park abounds with peculiar karstic forms, caves and other natural features, while due to its climate conditions, lush variety of flora and fauna has been preserved.
Despite its wild nature, Paklenica is easily accessible due to its proximity to the Adriatic highway and the motorway. The vistas of Velebit rising above the resort of Starigrad-Paklenica, which are at once intimidating and alluring, beckon those seeking light-hearted adventure. Movement through the park is aided by numerous signs in several foreign languages. Through the wild ruggedness of Velika Paklenica, where highland women once carried salt on their backs from the coast and brought wheat from the fertile hinterland of Lika, today runs a comfortable hiking trail.

National Park - Plitvicka jezera - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

This is Croatia’s best known national park and the only one of eight that is listed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage sites. The main attractions of this park, unique in the world, are the 16 small lakes joined by waterfalls created by the sedimentation of travertine, a special type of limestone. This national park encompasses the source of the river Korana, located in the area surrounded by dense forests of beech, fir and spruce. There are also several caves in the park, as well as springs and flowering meadows. The brown bear stands out as one of many protected animal species.
The popularity of this park is also boosted by the special means of transport used to ferry visitors around: the panoramic electric trains and the noiseless electro-powered boats. It is impossible to say whether the park is more beautiful in the spring, when the flowers in its meadows are in full bloom and when the trees have turned green again, or when the riot of autumn colours is reflected in the waters of the lakes, or indeed during the winter calm, when ice petrifies the waterfalls and when the surrounding trees are heavily laden with snow. By a network of paths, visitors can get around and access the numerous waterfalls and the rocky lake shores easily.

National Park - Northern Velebit - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The unique landscapes and the greatest wealth of flora and fauna are to be found in the area of Northern Velebit National Park. Located in the peak area of the northernmost part of the mountain and extending over 109 km2, the national park is rich in exceptional features: the cone like karstic formations known as Hajdučki kukovi and Rožanski kukovi, the botanical garden set in a natural environment, and the pothole Lukina jama (Luka’s pothole).
That is why Croatian mountaineers regard this area as the most precious jewel among all of the Croatia’s mountains.

Hajdučki kukovi and Rožanski kukovi, an endless range of rocky peaks with diverse and bizarre forms (the meaning of kukovi is hips) of up to 200 metres high, are situated in the very centre of the national park.
This amazing rocky landscape is protected as a strictly regulated reserve, the strictest form of the nature protection in the country. Located amid Hajdučki kukovi, at an altitude of 1,475 metres, is Lukina jama. With its base being a mere 83 metres above the sea level, its overall depth of 1,392 metres makes it the eighth deepest pothole in the world. Despite the harsh and hostile rock bound wilderness, in the 1930s a trail was masterfully built through the Rožanski kukovi by an engineer Ante Premužić, a dedicated lover of Velebit after whom the trail was named.
The Premužić trail is considered to be the most beautiful hiking trail in Croatia. It is also known as the one that offers, even to those of modest physical condition, an opportunity to walk safely along the edges of massive cliffs and precipitous abysses. From the trail one can enjoy wonderful views of the sea and the Kvarner islands.

Nature Park - Biokovo - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

This imposing mountain is by far the greatest sight of the Central Dalmatian coastline, and its only nature park. There are few places in the Mediterranean where peaks of over 1,500 metres high come so close to the sea and where mountains rise so steeply as they do here. It is the forbidding and inhospitable peaks of Biokovo that bestow an ever so welcome freshness during the heat of summer upon the coast, as well as proffering a whole range of nature’s gifts to its true lovers.
Apart from fresh air and the atmosphere of unsullied nature, Biokovo has beautiful hiking and cycling trails, pleasant resting places and interesting historical remains dating from the times when many shepherds roamed this difficult terrain.
Today, the nature park and its highest peak, the 1,758 metre high Sveti Jure, can be reached by road, either from the shores of the Makarska Riviera or from Dalmatian hinterland.

Nature Park - Lastovsko otocje - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

This remote group of islands is richly indented, full of greenery and boasts a unique folklore tradition. One of the reasons for such a high degree of preservation and the special atmosphere of peace and tranquillity is their remoteness: it takes more than a four hour journey from the mainland to reach them.
The waters of Lastovo allow true lovers of maritime life to indulge themselves fully, and only experienced yachtsmen sail these distant islands. Lastovo is equally attractive when approached from the north towards the small port of Pasadur across the open sea and towards enchanting Hidden Port, or if simply sailed into any of the romantic coves that surround this magical island. Having sailed into the waters of Lastovo, the most experienced sailors will not miss out on the chance to visit one of the island’s lighthouses, particularly Glavat located on a tiny island east of the main island of Lastovo, or Sušac, sitting on a cliff far out into the open sea.
Today, these lighthouses have been transformed into tourist facilities for those yearning for utter solitude and primeval romantic charm.

Brijuni, a group of islands comprising of two large and twelve smaller isles, are strung along Istria’s south western coast not far from Pula. Their surface area is barely seven km2, but together with the surrounding sea the total area of the park is 34 km2. Brijuni are renowned for its indented nature and the unspoiled Mediterranean vegetation, but the islands also boast an invaluable cultural heritage dating from the Roman and Byzantine times, which alongside with the outstanding natural beauty, has made them a popular holiday destination among the world statesmen and the aristocracy. Although not inhabited, because of the numerous tourists who are ferried over from the mainland by boat, there are people on the islands all year round.
Veliki Brijun offers accommodation in three small hotels, enabling their guests to savour an atmosphere of peace while being surrounded by beautiful nature and having the tourist flurry of Pula within easy reach. The site of the first golf course in Croatia is on Brijuni. Despite the numerous visitors, the landscape has been well preserved, as proved by a large number of birds which winter on the islands.

National Park - Risnjak - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

This mountain massif was named after the lynx, in Croatian ris, its most popular inhabitant. It covers the area of 64 km2 and being located where the Alps meet the Dinaric Range and where the Mediterranean gradually gives way to the Pannonia Plain, it combines almost all the forest types of the areas and contains numerous plant and animal species.
Nature lovers come to Risnjak for the beauty of the mountains, forests, waters and karst. The most frequent visitors are mountaineers, who find the highest peak of the massif the most rewarding challenge.
Risnjak’s summit is equally attractive in all seasons: in winter, when covered with snow; in spring, when the meadows around it transform into carpets of flowers; in summer, when it offers respite from the heat in the nearby littoral area, and in autumn, when the trees are bathed in a myriad of colours.
In addition to lynx, the symbol of the mountain, there are also brown bears, martens and dormice. Risnjak is also famous for its fantastic views of the islands in the Kvarner Bay and the mountains in neighbouring Slovenia and further to the Alps.

Nature Park - Zumberak - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

West of Zagreb is Žumberak Nature Park and Samobor Highlands. Their distinctive nature stems from the number of karstic phenomena atypical of the areas adjoining the Pannonia Plain: deep canyons, small, sparkling rivers bursting with numerous waterfalls and broad, flowering meadows. The special feature of Žumberak is its people, who live on the higher parts of the mountains, in villages clinging to the steep slopes.
The majority of the population are descendants of the famous Croatian guardians of the sea – Uskoks from the town of Senj, located on the shores of Kvarner. As some of the people are Greek Catholics, the villages of Žumberak are dotted with numerous small, picturesque churches, including the highest peak of Mount Žumberak the 1202 metre high Sveta Gera.
The foothills of Žumberak Samobor Hills are gentler, particularly the vineyards on the slopes of Plešivica. Grape vines blend nicely with the landscape, as do the numerous forts scattered across the surrounding hills, like the old town of Samobor.

Amongst the main attractions of Učka are the unique limestone formations in the area of Vrana and at the very top of Učka, where an old tower is erected. Mountaineers like to be photographed next to this tower. From the summit of the mountain there are unforgettable views of the nearby islands and Opatija Riviera.
Opatija owes its refreshing evenings to the shelter afforded by the lush forests of Učka. Učka’s peaks are frequently bathed in sunshine whilst its slopes are often blanketed in fog. This creates a special atmosphere. Walkers and mountaineers visiting Učka in mid-summer can enjoy it in all its beauty, whether through the refreshing wooded parts or along the mountain’s wind-swept ridge.
Numerous other features of interest are found there, such as caves and chapels, which provide shelter in inclement weather. The most courageous visitors like to take advantage of the favourable air currents and use the top of Učka as a launch pad for paragliding.

Velebit is the largest Croatian mountain and as such rich in natural phenomena. Protected as a nature park and extending over 2,000 km2 in area, it is by far the largest protected area in the country. Within the park there is a whole range of smaller protected areas, including two national parks: Northern Velebit in the Lika-Karlovac region and Paklenica in Dalmatia. Velebit mountain contains many natural sites which rank among the most precious in Croatia.
Therefore, the entire mountain, in its full length of about 150 km, has been placed under UNESCO protection as a World Biosphere Reserve, presently the only one in Croatia listed as such. Velebit is not only significant for the total number of various species and its wealth of flora and fauna but for the significant number of endemic species as well.

Telašćica is approachable by land and partly by road, but for the most part via hiking trails through picturesque Mediterranean landscapes.

Medvednica Mountain is covered with dense beech, oak, chestnut and fir forest and it certainly is favourite excursion destination for the Zagreb citizens and their guests. The mountain is criss-crossed by numerous paths and trails, less demanding ones that are fitted with benches and information boards and those more demanding suitable for mountaineers.
For those visiting the mountain leisurely, there is a funicular which starts from the city and goes to the very top of the mountain. The ruins of the medieval town Medvedgrad, located on an elevation in dense forest, a mere half an hour walk from the last of the city’s houses, are one of the most popular sites on Medvednica. Medvednica hides other attractions too: ravines, caves, waterfalls, old mine shafts and small picturesque churches.
Most people visit its peak, Sljeme, which is dominated by a TV broadcasting tower. Located around the summit are numerous mountain lodges where visitors, hikers and climbers can rest and restore their energy with popular “Sljeme” specialties such as bean soup with sausages and apple or cottage-cheese strudel.

The largest nature park in Central Croatia is Lonjsko polje, located in the valley of the river Sava, east of Zagreb. Covering an area of 506 km2, it is one of the largest European preserved wetlands, protected by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland area of the world importance. The park provides an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity typical of wide wetland expanses.
Growing alongside calm waters covered in water lilies are iconic oak forests, particularly beautiful at dusk. However, by far the greatest wealth of Lonjsko polje is in its 250 bird species. These include numerous small birds and different types of duck. The best known inhabitants of the park are storks, which habitually build their nests on the roofs of the lovely timber built village houses.
One such village is Čigoć, in 1994 declared to be the first European Village of Storks. Needless to say, the waters of Lonjsko polje attract other creatures such as snakes but we should point out that there are fewer poisonous snakes here than in the rocky south of Croatia.

Nature Park - Papuk - Interactive Map of Croatia - Tourist information in Croatia | Interactive Map of Croatia – Tourist information in Croatia

The features that visitors find most captivating are endless forests of Papuk, extending as far as the eye can see. These woods are mainly mountain beech, but there are also oak, fir and other types of trees. By far the most beautiful part of Papuk is Jankovan park-wood, one of Slavonia’s favourite excursion sites.
In a magical valley up in the mountains there are several sparkling brooks surrounded by flowering meadows and dense beech woods. At the top of the mountains is the loveliest of all its adornments: the Jankovac waterfall. There is also a mountain lodge of the same name, regarded by many Croatian mountaineers as the most beautiful and the most comfortable of all of the Croatia’s mountain lodges.
However beautiful the woods, brooks and waterfalls may be, what makes this mountain unique in Croatia is its geology. Here, one can see all the ages of rocks, from the Palaeozoic to the most recent Quaternary period. This is also the only Croatian mountain to have an abundance of volcanic rocks.
Consequently, here near the picturesque village of Voćin, is where the first Croatian geological park Rupnica, known for the unusual strata it contains was founded. Due to its exceptionally interesting and valuable geology, Papuk has been included in the list of world geological parks, the first such park in Croatia.

The greenest waters and forests in the whole of Slavonia are to be found in Kopački rit Nature Park. The park covers the wetland area around the confluence of Drava and Danube rivers, near Osijek, covering a total of 238 hectares, and which, due to its inaccessibility, has remained in the intact state since the olden times.
Kopački rit is one of the largest natural wetlands in Europe and as such has been recommended for inclusion in the UNESCO List of Natural Heritage. Large herds of deer are practically a trade mark of Kopački rit, despite the fact that herds of wild boar are just as large.
There are other mammals in the park but far more numerous are birds, a total of 300 different species. The most important among them are the very rare and protected species: white tailed eagle and black stork. The park can be easily reached by car from nearby Osijek, the largest town in Slavonia, and visitors can abandon themselves to the primeval ambiances of the wetlands, forests and diluvial fields.
The best way, however, to tour the park is on excursion boats which are able to reach even the shallow, swampy backwaters. The beauties of the park can also be enjoyed by the tourists sailing the Danube, the river which marks the eastern border of this truly magnificent nature park.
